Protoss vs Protoss: counters and game plan

Every common Protoss plan in PvP, the Protoss answer, and one current opening. Open the live tool to tag scouted units and tighten the read mid-game.

Information first

Opening: Gateway scout into Robo safety

Gateway expand when safe, early Adept/Stalker, Robo or Stargate before greedy upgrades.

Goal: Stay alive against proxy Robo, 2-Gate, or DTs while keeping a path to a real third.

First five minutes

  • Probe confirms second pylon and gas count.
  • Keep the first Observer or Oracle active.
  • Do not skip detection if the opponent hides tech.

Scout for

  • Missing second pylon
  • No Nexus
  • Fast Twilight or hidden Robo

Transition: Immortal/Sentry anchors the midgame; add Blink, Archons, or Disruptors when the map opens.

Immortal Sentry into Archon stability

Core:

StalkerSentryImmortalObserver

Tech switches:

ArchonHigh TemplarDisruptorWarp Prism

Upgrades: Blink, Charge, Ground weapons

Fight it right

  • Force fields buy time for the Immortal count to matter.
  • Mirror their mobility with Blink or Prism, not only raw army supply.

Do not drift into this

  • Do not spend all gas on tech before your gateway count is real.
  • Do not fight without vision of the warp-in angle.

Robo splash

High-value splash that wins if you clump or attack late.

Tempest or Disruptor mirror with Prism leverage

Core:

StalkerImmortalObserverSentry

Tech switches:

DisruptorTempestHigh TemplarWarp Prism

Upgrades: Blink, Ground weapons, Air weapons

Fight it right

  • Use Prism pickups to deny Disruptor hits and preserve Immortals.
  • Tempests outrange Colossus and force the Robo army to move.

Do not drift into this

  • Do not mirror Colossus count if they already have the Viking or Tempest answer.
  • Do not forget Observers. Invisible vision wins Robo wars.

Tempest control with Archon Storm underneath

Core:

Tech switches:

TempestHigh TemplarCarrierVoid Ray

Upgrades: Air weapons, Storm, Ground armor

Fight it right

  • Tempests pick at Carriers and force Protoss to engage into Storm.
  • Archons protect against Interceptors and Void Rays at close range.

Do not drift into this

  • Do not tech swap after losing air upgrades. Commit to the counter path.
  • Do not take an air fight without battery or Storm support.

Invisible or flying worker damage into a normal Protoss economy.

Observer discipline with Blink safety

Core:

StalkerObserverSentryShield Battery

Tech switches:

OracleArchonHigh TemplarPhoenix

Upgrades: Blink, Ground weapons, Air weapons

Fight it right

  • Observers stay with both army and exposed bases.
  • Blink Stalkers punish Oracles and stop DT follow-up warp-ins.

Do not drift into this

  • Do not move out with your only Observer.
  • Do not let Stasis Wards or DTs split your army before a fight.
